Jo's work explores ceramic forms that sit somewhere between plants, sea life and imagined organisms.
About
Jo Lamoureux is a South Tyneside–based ceramic artist. Her practice centres on handbuilt sculptural forms that feel discovered rather than designed – objects that suggest growth, erosion, or evolution, without belonging to a specific time or place. Drawing on influences from natural history, marine environments, ancient civilisations, and speculative worlds, her work explores a visual language of biomorphic forms. Shapes echo coral, seed pods, skeletal structures and fossil-like textures, resulting in pieces that feel like fragments of an unknown ecosystem or remnants of a culture that never existed. Each object carries a quiet sense of narrative, inviting curiosity and interpretation. Working intuitively with clay, Jo responds to the material as much as she directs it. Handbuilding techniques are used to embrace irregularity, surface variation, and the evidence of touch. Marks, joins and subtle asymmetries are left visible, reinforcing the idea that these forms are grown rather than manufactured. Glaze is applied selectively to enhance depth, warmth and organic colour, allowing each piece to develop its own character. The collection brings together a series of works that reflect this ongoing exploration of material, form and imagined environments. Alongside the objects themselves, Jo also offers ceramics workshops for beginners and emerging makers, creating space for shared making, experimentation and creative confidence.
