I’m Danielle Cosgrove, a self-taught photographer, barber and creative based in the North East of England. Photography for me has always been about more than creating a technically perfect image. I’m drawn to photographs that make you feel something — images with atmosphere, tension, movement and a sense that something happened just before the shutter was pressed, or is about to happen just after it. My style is heavily influenced by cinema. I love bold colour, deep contrast, unusual lighting and the way a single frame from a film can tell an entire story without explaining everything. I approach my portrait work in much the same way, using colour and light as part of the narrative rather than simply as a way of illuminating someone. There’s often a darker, grittier edge to my work. I love texture, imperfections, shadows, neon, strange locations and creating characters that feel as though they belong to a world beyond the photograph. I’m much more interested in atmosphere than perfection. I want my images to feel lived-in, cinematic and slightly unpredictable. Alongside photography, I’m also a barber and run my own barbershop, Grove Studios. Barbering and photography might seem like completely different worlds, but for me they’re closely connected. Both are about people, creativity and making someone feel comfortable enough to be themselves. Spending years behind the chair has taught me how to talk to almost anyone, read people and create an environment where they can relax — something that has become incredibly valuable when I’m standing behind a camera. Grove Studios has also become an extension of that creative outlook. I’ve always wanted the space to be more than somewhere people simply come for a haircut. It’s a place where barbering, photography, art and community can cross over.
